Students in each of our undergraduate programs must successfully complete 120 credits (40 subjects) to graduate. Each program is different and may include subjects from a combination of the following categories:

University Exploration subjects

University Explorations is the university’s general education program. General education is a vital part of a student’s course of study at Saint Leo University, as it informs, deepens, and extends learning beyond the major.

Through a topical focus, University Explorations subjects demonstrate the relevance of the liberal arts and sciences to today’s world, cultivating essential skills in critical thinking and decision making, effective communication, problem solving, analysis, and creativity.

The curriculum consists of 42 credit hours consisting of 12 credits (4 subjects) from Foundation Courses (basic knowledge in composition, mathematics, and computer skills), and of 30 credits (10 subjects) spread over 5 Learning Clusters representing the liberal arts and sciences.

Foundation Subjects


Foundation Subjects in writing, mathematics, and computer science prepare students to deal effectively with the rest of their coursework at Saint Leo University. These essential subjects lay the groundwork for undergraduate students to succeed by providing them with the basic skills and tools that are required in upper-level courses. They consist of:

  • ENG 121 - Academic Writing I (3 credits)
  • ENG 122 - Academic Writing II (3 credits)
  • MAT 131 - College Mathematics (3 credits) or MAT 141 – Finite Mathematics Complete MAT 131 or higher. Business majors must complete MAT 141. (Note the prerequisite for MAT 141.)
  • COM 140 - Basic Computer Skills (3 credits)

Learning Clusters

  • The Human Adventure - 6 credits (2 subjects): Exploring our past, living in the present, and shaping our future.
  • The Human Mosaic - 3 credits (1 subject): Building our identity, expressing our diversity.
  • Science in a Changing World - 6 credits (2 subjects): Discovering our place in the natural world.
  • The Creative Life - 6 credits (2 subjects): Expressing our human condition through the arts.
  • The Reflective and Spiritual Life - 9 credits; Philosophy 3 (3 subjects, 1 Philosophy): Asking questions, finding our purpose.

The University Exploration Subject curriculum provides students with knowledge of the Benedictine values ​​and Catholic traditions of Saint Leo University, with a focus on the liberal arts and sciences, equipping them with knowledge necessary to be successful in college and throughout life.

Based on the experiences that students receive during the program, Saint Leo University seeks to train professionals who:

  • Demonstrate skills in learning, writing, reading, critical thinking, computer science, technology, and mathematical applications.
  • Demonstrate the ability to face the fundamental questions about the nature of humanity, the way the world has come to be and questions of morality.

Common Body of Knowledge

The Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) for all Tapia College of Business majors provides the academic background to understand the economic structure of our global society. Those who enter the competitive market for scarce resources must be prepared to support public and private segments of our society. The College has developed an academic program in conjunction with liberal arts that develops the whole person capable of creative critical thinking and problem solving.
